On the announcement of the new 100' project, super maxi 'Alfa Romeo 2', a full Future Fibres' PBO rigging solution was chosen over alternative composite solutions for its weight, performance and aerodynamic advantages. The project began in early 2005 in collaboration with the mast manufacturer, Southern Spars, with the design of spreader apertures, fittings and cables.
Launched in July 2005, Alfa Romeo 2 measures in at 100' with a massive mast height of 144', enabling the boat to carry in excess of a third more sail area than her predecessor. The boat is stacked with a 45 degree canting keel, twin rudders, carbon mast, carbon/Mylar sails and complete PBO composite rigging; despite these additional components the boat weighs in at just over 100kg heavier than Alfa Romeo 1!
