Ruurt Meulemans of Hoek Design says they specify composite rigging: “primarily because of weight and good fatigue life properties. Now with long-time experience and new developments in accuracy and quality control, we have the confidence to use fibre rigging on a yacht this size. We have seen this acceptance in carbon masts and are convinced it will happen with PBO as well. For the 53m it meant reducing the rig weight by 2 tonnes, increasing the righting moment and reducing the amount of ballast making a lighter and faster boat”.
