Given the range of fibres and technologies now available - the right fibre depends not only on cable application but on the type of programme as well.
LATERALS
Windage, followed by weight are likely to be the primary decision criteria and TSC will give you the optimum solution in terms of both.
FORESTAYS
These are the longest, heaviest cables on the boat and, again, TSC offers the smallest, lightest solution but comes with practical limitations. FlexC™ offers the lightest, smallest option that is coilable and stiff enough for the job.
TORSIONAL CABLES
These are fundamentally different cable design where cover strength / durability is more important than core strength. However a PBO core offers the lightweight and coilability which is essential for these cables that are stored in a bag.
RUNNING AFT
These are long cables with high load variation, shock loading, subject to a lot of flicking/bashing abuse and spend 50% of their working life offload.
For inshore regatta racing,TSC is not a practical option for these cables that will constantly be on and off the boat and FlexC™ is the smallest, lightest, stiffest alternative.
For long offshore sailing, TSC is a possibility, and would provide optimum weight/windage, but there are issues of bending/impact around the boom area when off load. FlexC™ or Enduro PBO offer the flexibility and stiffness for minimum additional weight and diameter.
