As Grand Prix race rigs start to roll out of the Future Fibres spar facility in Valencia, the design team have been busy undertaking the key development work required to take superyacht mast technology to the next level.
This is a great opportunity for this newly formed team to pool their previous experience working on many of the biggest and best projects to have been carried out over the last 15 years*.
The team is also supported by our technical partners, Persico Spa, whose design and engineering departments have a wealth of experience in the aerospace and automotive sectors. Together they have a clean sheet of paper to re-think the design principles for the ultimate superyacht mast.
So, what are some of the key factors and benefits that will set a Future Fibres superyacht spar apart from the competition?
Design
LIGHTER, STIFFER, YET SAFER TUBE DESIGN - The use of Catia & Abaqus integrated design software facilitates ply by ply laminate analysis, adding laminate only where it is required.
Mast tube
HIGH QUALITY EXTERIOR FINISH - From the use of female moulding.
LIGHTER TUBE WITH GREATER STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY - This is achieved by co-curing the fore & aft shells, creating a perfect join with less glue and less filler - no other manufacturer uses this technique. The two shells are then split, post cure, for complex internal fit-out. The saving in glue and fairing of the join on a big mast can be equivalent to reducing keel weight by as much as half a ton.
FLEXIBILITY OF TUBE TAPER - Modular tooling provides more options for customisation.
FITTING OPTIMISATION - Unconstrained by a library of parts, full customisation and optimisation of parts delivers weight and functional benefits.
IN-MAST VISUAL AND LOAD SENSING -
The Future Fibres design team are developing relationships with electronics specialists to offer real-time mast and rigging monitoring.
Spreaders
MINIMUM WEIGHT WITH PERFECT EXTERIOR FINISHING - Achieved with CNC milled female aluminium tooling.
LOW PROFILE, LIGHTWEIGHT SPREADER ENDS - Seamless integration with Future Fibres' latest 2nd generation rigging technology.
Booms
Furling booms are one of the most complex and important systems on the modern sailing superyacht. Future Fibres is currently working on a testing programme for a very exciting megayacht project. This is a fantastic platform for the development team and it is a testament to their depth of experience that they should be entrusted with such a ground breaking project. It has given the team the opportunity to fully evaluate available systems and technologies. They are currently building scale prototypes to test production methods and trial mechanical operating systems.
